INTERNATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR YOUTH REPRESENTATIVES ON ENVIRONMENT AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Background
The World Youth Foundation (WYF), NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations is a non-governmental organization whose aims are to promote research, development and documentation of youth programmes beneficial to youths worldwide. Since its inception in 1994, WYF has provided a platform for the interchange of ideas among youth organizations, both locally and internationally by organizing various seminars for youth on areas such as population, HIV/AIDS, human rights, education, drug and substance abuse, globalization, environment, terrorism, culture and tolerance etc .

Its mission is to serve as a catalyst to strengthen and enhance the dignity and well-being of youth. The Foundation works closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, Malaysian Youth Council, UN Agencies, ESCAP, World Associations of NGOs, Clean Up the World, World Assembly of Youth among others. The Foundation is headed by Rt. Hon. Datuk Ali Rustam who is also the Chief Minister of the State of Melaka.

World Youth Foundation in cooperation with the UNEP, Emirates Diving Association, UAE, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Thailand, Ministry of Youth & Sports Malaysia, Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment Malaysia, Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia , the State Government of Melaka and various other agencies will be hosting the International Training Workshop for Youth Representatives On Environment and Disaster Management from 19-23rd August 2006, Melaka , Malaysia

This international training workshop is a follow-up of the International Conference on Environment and Disaster Management held in Melaka, Malaysia from 26 – 29th August 2005 where the conference participants collectively adopted the Malacca Youth Declaration on Sustainable Development of Environment & Disaster Management.

The proposed international training workshop will “Operationalize the Malacca Youth Declaration on Sustainable Development of Environment & Disaster Management” and will bring all theories to action learning. The idea of participation is based on our conviction that young people themselves are the best resources for promoting their development. In this new millennium, they can help to meet the challenges of the world’s burgeoning environmental problems.

Objectives
To create awareness and encourage greater educational presence on nature/environment

1) To empower youth to use education and communication as key tools to achieve MDGs
2) To examine existing approaches and proven success stories on environment conservation, i.e awareness and prevention programmes
3) To understand, involve and dialogue with youth about their vision of the future and desire (or not) on sustainability

Proposed Outcome
1) To make youths as environmental ambassadors in their respective countries
2) To devise and train youths on environment related issues by collaborating with Governments, international agencies, NGOs
3) To devise a Disaster Management Manual/Website Materials / Publication for the information of all youth worldwide.
4) To recognize Outstanding Green Youth Ambassadors as a Program organized under the banner of UNEP
5) To foster partnerships with youth organizations and international agencies to develop local and national projects.
