About

ABOUT

The World Youth Foundation (WYF) is “an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations” and an NGO Associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information. World Youth Foundation is international non-governmental organisation which was launched in 1994 with the aim to promote research, development and documentation of youth programmes beneficial to youth worldwide.

In February 2007, WYF was granted “Civil Society Status” by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as a recognition to the Foundation’s work in creating awareness on environment related issues. WYF is a full member of the Commonwealth Youth Council and has established “Operational Status” with Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO.

The International Capacity Building Workshop on Green Growth is a follow up to the International Workshop on Climate Change organized in May 2015. The International Capacity Building Workshop on Green Growth is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, International Youth Council, IDEAS for US and various other agencies. This year’s programme will be addressing issues on how young people can achieve a greener planet, liveable cities, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability, causes and impacts, education and awareness strategies and policies.

Recognizing that youth participation is fundamental for accelerating the progress of SDGs and the post-2030 agenda; youth engagement throughout the International Workshop will be enhanced to ensure that their views and contributions are acknowledged and strengthened. Green growth has been identified as one of the most important emerging issues of our time. Over the last 20 years, economic growth has helped to lift almost a billion people out of extreme poverty.but 1 billion people are still extremely poor. 1.1 billion live without electricity and 2.5 billion people without access to sanitation. For them, growth has not been inclusive enough.

Currently, the agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the approved Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the Rio +20 Outcome Document “the Future We Want, and the Paris Agreement on climate processes present an unprecedented opportunity to advance sustainable development. Eradicating poverty and restructuring of the global economy to low carbon and environmentally sustainable economic pathways are within the reach of developed and developing countries, and are mutually complimentary and reinforcing. De-carbonization is the key to meet the full scale of the global climate challenge.

This can be done if domestic efforts are scaled up and simultaneously leveraged through an international framework that provides incentives. Combined, accelerated action and increased ambition will foster a ‘race to the top’ that can help avert the worst effects of climate change.

Such ambitious action needs the involvement of all actors and stakeholders and engagement of youth is of paramount importance.

These challenges have made business-as-usual practices and conventional growth strategies no longer acceptable. Green Growth as one of the strategies to achieve sustainable development specifically aims at improving the ecological quality of growth, and greening conventional economic systems, while developing a green economy. Green Growth polices provide a powerful tool for re-examining the conventional growth paradigm, while show-casing that economic prosperity can go hand-in-hand with ecological sustainability.

While green growth cannot solve the root causes of poverty, improving the ecological quality of growth also improves several aspects of the economic and social qualities, given that economies and societies both depend on the goods and services provided by the natural environment.

In this regard, investments in natural and human capital are the key drivers for sustained economic development for all countries, especially in the light of the newly endorsed Sustainable Development Goals. Investing in youth leaders and their knowledge and capacity to further train others is very important.

Objectives of the Workshop

  • To strengthen knowledge and awareness of young leaders in green growth policies, to support the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda with special reference to SDG2, SDG6, SDG7,SDG8, SDG11 SDG12, ,SDG13, SDG14, SDG15 and SDG17.
  • To train young leaders in development and application of green growth programmes, strategies, and provide them the necessary tools to undertake programmes in their own settings.
  • To create partnerships with youth organizations for an inclusive green economy to achieve the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda
  • A platform to inspire others by sharing their knowledge, best practices and lessons learned on breaking down silos and deploying inclusive green economy frameworks to develop integrated approaches to sustainable development.

Methodology

The activities will include:

  • Presentations by local and international speakers;
  • Capacity building training workshop by trainers which will consist of using “The Hive” model which will directly engage workshop participants in a collaborative and interactive manner to learn about key concepts of project planning and implementation. In name, The Hive represents a beehive and the bees are the attendees of the event. The “bees” gather at The Hive (breakout groups of participants) and formulate an action plan to address a global problem with a local solution. The key to a successful Hive is allowing participants to openly discuss and share ideas about how to effectively address their communities most pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. The goal is to crowdsource best practices for sustainable development and green growth through an intergenerational, interdisciplinary, and interactive approach.
  • Field trips to demonstrate success stories of green growth applications in the local community.
