For most Malaysians, 31st August is a day of flags, parades, patriotic songs and celebrations to mark the nation’s Independence Day. But for those born on this special day, carries an even more personal meaning and significance. They not only celebrate Malaysia’s Independence Day; they celebrate their own birthday on the very same auspicious day.
The World Youth Foundation (WYF) organised a gathering for these special citizens in the historical state of Melaka where the first Malaysian Prime Minister of the then Federation of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman, announced 31st August 1957 as the the date of the nation’s Independence from British rule. Hence, it is a coincidence of birth that gives these individuals a distinctive place in the nation’s calendar, being born on August 31st, a date when the nation annually celebrates its Independence day.
91 children joined in the festive occasion – Sambutan Hari Jadi Anak Merdeka – which was held at the Mahkota Parade, a prominent shopping mall located at Bandar Hilir, Melaka. Also present were 91 adults and six senior citizens. The children, in particular, took part in a showcase of colourful patriotic dress and attire which left the audience with much awe and admiration.
To make the occasion more auspicious and eventful was the attendance of the Governor of the state of Melaka, His Excellency Tun Seri Setia Dr. Hj. Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam who, together with the Chairman of the World Youth Foundation, Datuk Mohd Ridhwan Mohd Ali, hosted the festive occasion with cake cutting and prize give aways.
Also in attendance was WYF Secretary-General, Dato’ Dr. Norsabrina bt Nor Mohd Nor.
