MELAKA: A plastic bottle recycling program organized by the World Youth Foundation (WYF) in conjunction with the National-Level Aidilfitri Madani 2025 Celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, successfully collected two roll-on roll-off (RORO) bins full of plastic bottles in just one day.
The program, supported by over 100 volunteers, attracted participation from various government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and volunteers from both local and international communities, including participants from Singapore.
WYF Chairman, Datuk Mohd. Ridhwan Mohd. Ali, said the program proved that public awareness of environmental sustainability is growing significantly among the community.
“If a 250-milliliter (ml) plastic bottle without liquid weighs around 13 grams (g), imagine the number of bottles collected to fill two RORO trucks. This is a major achievement made possible through the collective efforts of all parties,” he told Utusan Malaysia.
He added that the initiative not only contributed to the collection of plastic waste, but also raised public awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management among visitors.
“This is a small yet meaningful step toward a more sustainable future. Next year, we plan to expand the program to include the segregation of other types of plastic waste such as cups and plates, as well as organic and food waste generated during the celebration at MITC,” he said.
The program also received strong support from the Main Committee of the National-Level Aidilfitri Madani 2025 Celebration and the local authorities (PBT) involved. – UTUSAN
